How it started

From one community center to a movement across Latvia

Back in 2008, I started with something small. A single bachata workshop at a community center in Rīga's Ķengarags district. Just 12 people showed up — mostly folks in their 50s who'd never danced before. That's where everything began.

Those first participants taught me what really matters. It wasn't about perfecting technique or looking good on a dance floor. It was about feeling alive again. About connection, movement, and discovering that your body can still do beautiful things at 50, 60, even 70.

Over the next decade, word spread. I added salsa classes. Then merengue workshops. Partner dance technique sessions. By 2014, I'd earned my International Latin Dance Certification from the World Dance Council, but honestly, my real education came from watching people transform. From the woman who hadn't danced since her wedding, now leading her partner with confidence. From the widower who found community and purpose again on the dance floor.

The big moment came in 2019 when we organized Latvia's first national Senior Latin Dance Festival. Dancers came from across the country. It wasn't a competition — it was a celebration. That's when I realized this wasn't just about dance anymore. It was about proving that age isn't a limit. It's just a different starting point.

My approach

What guides my work

Everyone can dance

Age isn't a barrier — it's just context. I've worked with people who hadn't moved intentionally in 30 years. They're now teaching other dancers. There's no "too late" in dance.

Connection matters more than perfection

A beautiful connection between partners beats flawless footwork every time. That's what I focus on in my teaching and writing — how to truly connect with another person through movement.

Accessibility is non-negotiable

All my guides include modifications. If something doesn't work for your knees, back, or balance, there's always another way to do it. Inclusive dance is real dance.

Community creates change

The transformation isn't just physical — it's social and emotional. When you're part of a dance community, you're part of something bigger than yourself. That matters.
